The ‘Switched on Pop’ podcast is hit or miss for me, but this week's episode about "interpolations" - i.e., songs that are crafted specifically to remind you of other songs, ideally without quite ripping them off completely - is pretty fascinating. Also, in some ways, depressing, but I for one prefer my depressing news to at least be interesting as well. As usual, it turns out the culprit is naked capitalism, with a side of copyright creep and a dollop of litigiousness. But, for what it's worth, shameless soundalikes are nothing new in this business.
