I'm not sure I have enough to say about this to make it the link today, but I enjoyed this Defector piece about how the winner of the Mark Messier NHL Leadership Award is selected. Read that and then read this stuff:

Long live our beautiful Moon Tree

Back in the early '70s, NASA brought a bunch of tree seeds up on Apollo 14 to circle the moon and come home. It didn't go totally smoothly with the seeds but back on earth, eventually they sprouted and grew enough to be planted around the 1976 bicentennial celebration, and then seemingly everyone in the country forgot all about them.

Claire L. Evans discusses how that all went over here on the Wild Information newsletter, where she writes:

Last year, I pitched a version of this story to a magazine, suggesting that I could round out the piece by visiting the moon tree plantings closest to me, along California’s central coast. The editor, very kindly, told me this might be boring for readers.

Rude!

Dissumulate
